The Deputy Fire Marshal assists in providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, contractors, architects, engineers and the general public as to the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations. The Deputy Fire Marshal will assist clients to facilitate the highest standard of fire and life safety within structures and properties. In conjunction with the Fire Marshal, the Deputy Fire Marshal ensures that inspections in structures and properties are carried out to verify that fire and life safety measures are provided to at least the minimum standard. The Deputy Fire Marshal will assist the Fire Marshal in ensuring that an investigation is to occur in the event of any fire or explosion to determine the cause, origin and contributing factors. The Deputy Fire Marshal is responsible for verifying that the development of educational materials and the delivery of training meet the goals of the Fire Safety Act.The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through five (5) years’ experience in the fire service as a Fire Officer or Manager along with the following certifications from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard: NFPA 1021 – Level 1, Fire Officer; NFPA 1001 – Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification; NFPA 1031 – Level 2, Fire Inspector; NFPA – 1033 Fire Investigator or NFPA 921 – Fire Explosion Investigator; NFPA 1035 – Level 1, Fire and Life Safety Educator and NFPA 1041 – Level 2, Fire Service Instructor. A Class three (3) Driver’s License with Air Brake Certification or equivalent is required. NFPA 1002 – Fire Apparaus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications will be considered an asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.
