An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Please note that the Niagara Region requires that all newly hired employees are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of being hired and provide proof of full vaccination, or provide proof of a bona fide medical or Human Rights Code exemption on a form issued from and approved by Niagara Region.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYProvides resident-focused service in the Long Term Care Home by monitoring the Food Services department including assisting the role of Nutrition Manager as required, which includes training of staff, scheduling, inventory and other functions. Responsible for maintaining resident nutritional care plans and meeting the nutritional needs of residents within the home. Actively involved in the multi-disciplinary teams within the Homes. Works according to and maintains all applicable standards, acts and governing bodies.QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Two-year post-secondary program accredited by Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM) in Food Service Nutrition Management, or a program evaluated by the CSNM to meet these requirements
  • Must be a current member of The Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM)
  • A current Safe Food Handling Certificate as required by legislation/Act
  • Additional related training or education such as gerontology, nutrition, sanitation, etc. are assets
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum one (1) year current, related experience, preferably in an institutional or long term care geriatric setting
  • Experience providing functional guidance, training and/or overseeing the work of others, and participating in the delivery of food services to residents
  • Experience with and knowledge of clinical nutritional documentation
  • Good knowledge of kitchen operating procedures, food storage to ensure safety, quality and sanitation standards are met following Public Health and applicable regulations
  • Safety and fire regulation awareness
  • Must have a clear understanding of relevant policies, procedures, legislation, regulations, guidelines and best practices applicable to the long-term care and food service sectors, such as Canadas Food Guide to Healthy Eating, International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI), Fixing Long Term Care Act, Public Health regulations etc.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Knowledge of resident safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident safety practices
SKILLS
  • Working co-operatively with staff, effectively supervising in the absence of the Nutrition Manager
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, family and residents
  • Ability to read menus and apply mathematical fractions and decimals
  • Ability to adjust menus/recipes as required while assisting/completing the process of planning/implantation of new menus and individual menus for residents based on therapeutic diet needs
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, quality and organization
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Reliable and conscientious to carry out the duties of the position
  • Organized and time management skills in order to meet demanding schedules
  • Competent working with digital/electronic technology; including electronic tablets, computers/laptops. Clinical Programs (i.e. Point Click Care), food service-related software (i.e. Tray Card), and Microsoft Office products i.e. Outlook, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Must be able to exercise judgement and initiative
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
  • Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
    • Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
  • Must be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of this position
  • Must have a good attendance record
  • Must be able to work days, afternoons, evening and weekends with the willingness/ability to accommodate shift changes, work locations and/or provide remote support for all regional homes
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • May assist in inventory management and control including food and supply purchasing.
  • Read menus assisting/completing the process of adjusting or planning the implantation of new menus and individual menu for residents based on therapeutic diet needs.
  • Assists and supports the Food Service kitchen duties (i.e. cooking/serving) and department Personnel as required.
  • Assists with schedules and replacing staff as required.
  • Assists with training of new staff, transfers and CSNM Students as required.
  • Assists in planning and preparation/delivery for special events for residents/staff.
  • Support and assist the Manager as required.
  • Completes resident referrals regarding nutritional and therapeutic dietary needs. Identify resident food preferences, tolerances and food/supplement acceptance. Forward referrals for residents identified at high nutritional risk to the in home Registered Dietitian as required.
  • Responsible for all clinical duties including MDS assessments, new admission profiles, quarterly nutritional assessments and nutritional risk screens. Ensuring resident nutritional care plans and tray card are updated and current and all required documents are printed weekly.
  • Attends and participates in multi-disciplinary committees, Annual Interdisciplinary Care Conferences and Post Admission Conferences. Completes all required documentation.
  • Completes/Assists with in-service training programs.
  • Assist with various food service sanitation and meal service audits as assigned and discuss findings with Nutrition & Environmental Manager.
  • In emergencies, assist with the activation of emergency plans and carry out duties assigned associated with the response plans.
  • Provide functional advice, guidance and training to staff, at the direction of the Manager.
  • Carry out duties with appropriate attention for resident safety and in a manner consistent with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Participates in mandatory training as required by the Ministry of Long Term Care, Seniors Services and the Niagara Region.
  • May perform or assist with the duties of Cook, Assistant Cook and Food Service Worker, as required.
