Job Description

  • This position is posted as Regular, Part-time (0 to 36 hours per week).
  • There is no guarantee of hours on a Part-time basis.
  • This is a 24/7 operation – Successful applicants must be willing to work day/evening/nights including weekends.
Please Note: Core Communication (CAD) Training will take place starting January 2023 for approximately 4 – 6 months.Training is full-time, held: Monday – Friday, typically 8:00am – 4:00pm.Recruitment process is as follows:Please note communication and all assessments will be sent via email using the address you provided in your application. You will be notified via email at each stage if you are moving forward to the next stage or not. Please ensure that you check your ‘Junk’ folder in your email in case any messages are automatically put into this folder.
  • CritiCall assessment (mid Oct.): All applicants are required to complete an online CritiCall assessment, which is a computer based assessment and evaluates areas such as data entry skills, memory recall, critical thinking, medical terminology and Niagara geography.
  • First round interviews (end of Oct.): If you successfully meet the Criticall assessment benchmarks, you will be invited to attend an online interview via Zoom.
  • Clearfit assessment – following the first round of interviews: Applicants will be required to complete an online behavioural/personality assessment.
  • Second round interviews (mid. Nov.): If you successfully meet the first round interviews benchmarks and pass the Clearfit assessment, you will be invited to attend a second round online interview via ZOOM.
If you are successful with this position, you will be required to produce or complete the following documents:
  • Grade 12 Diploma (or equivalent e.g. GED)
  • Valid CPR (CPR-C level, CPR-HCP or higher) and First Aid (not expiring within the next 3 months)
  • Proof of up-to-date immunizations: Tetanus, Rubella, Mumps, Diphtheria, Chicken Pox, Hepatitis B, Poliomyelitis, Measles, TB, Influenza, and fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (both doses).

  • Proof of unrestricted driver’s license
  • Produce a basic police clearance
  • EHS (Ambulance Card)
  • If you are successful, references will be conducted. We require a minimum of 3 work related references from individuals who supervised your work, no personal references or peer references are accepted.
Successful candidates will be required to complete pre-coursework; this will be required to complete 2 to 4 weeks prior to the official start dateApplicants are required to successfully complete and receive a passing grade for all components of the Core Communication Training program. This is an intense training program and successful candidates are required to attend full-time for approximately 4 to 6 months. An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Please note that the Niagara Region requires that all newly hired employees are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of being hired and provide proof of full vaccination, or provide proof of a bona fide medical or Human Rights Code exemption on a form issued from and approved by Niagara Region.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYUnder the guidance of the Training Supervisor, Operations Supervisor or System Status Controller, an SSC trainee will receive, assess, monitor, allot priority to and communicate a prompt response in both English and French to obtain maximum coverage and efficiency for all requests for routine and emergency ambulance services, fire services and other agencies where required, and maintain accurate records of all calls and movements in a closely supervised environment in order to develop the competencies of the System Status Controller position.EDUCATION
  • Hold an Ontario Secondary School Graduation diploma or have academic qualifications approved as equivalent by the Ministry of Education.
EXPERIENCE
  • Core & CAD Ambulance Communication 640 hour accredited course or equivalent is an asset
  • Up to 6 (six) months experience in a call centre environment
  • Knowledge of ambulance operations, policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology in order to understand medical diagnosis and condition of patients and to communicate with paramedics, physicians and other hospital staff is an asset.
  • Experience in an EMS communications centre is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Regional Niagara, its district transportation systems and roadways is an asset
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Position requires qualifications as per Regulation 19, Part III (8) of the Ambulance Act of Ontario.
  • Hold or acquire within 30 days of employment, a valid first-aid certificate; and a valid restricted radio-telephone operator’s certificate.
  • Hold a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate to the Basic Rescuer level at the time of employment and be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation every twenty-four (24) months thereafter.
  • Hold or acquire Core & CAD Ambulance Communication 640 hour course approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and obtained a pass standing in an emergency communication examination set or approved by the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care.
  • Fluency in both English and French is an asset.
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance.
  • Any legislated requirements in accordance with the Ambulance Act of Ontario
  • It is the employee’s responsibility to possess and maintain a valid and restriction-free driver’s license of appropriate class to carry out the duties of the job.
  • An annual influenza vaccination is recommended.
SKILLS
  • Ability to critically, competently and consistently assess circumstances of an incident in order to deploy assistance to caller as appropriate.
  • Ability of spatial concepts in order to elicit and understand directions and geographic information to ensure appropriate resources (i.e. paramedics, firefighters, etc.) arrive at an incident without delay.
  • Communication and decision-making skills are required for determining the nature of the calls and for assigning emergency priority and for communicating with individuals in an extreme state of mental anxiety.
  • Keyboarding skills at 45 wpm with 90% accuracy and ability to operate computerized telecommunications and information software.
  • To be considered for employment, candidates must successfully demonstrate pre-employment qualifications which are determined through standardized tests and training.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
